EDF Energy tariffs: which ones earn the £50 credit

EDF Energy’s Refer a Friend scheme pays £50 across most standard domestic tariffs. Business supply, prepayment meters, and existing-customer top-ups don’t qualify.

Full breakdown below with plain-English notes on each tariff type, plus the eligibility rules that determine whether your switch will credit. Verified 14 October 2026.

Qualifying tariffs — the ones that earn £50

Most standard domestic EDF Energy tariffs qualify for the £50 Refer a Friend bill credit. Pick whichever suits your usage profile.

Fixed dual fuel

Electricity + gas on a fixed unit rate for 12 or 24 months. The most common choice — locks in price certainty even when the wholesale market moves. Standing charge fixed too.

Variable / standard

Unit rate tracks Ofgem’s price cap quarterly. More flexible (no exit fees) but less predictable. Also qualifies for £50 — verify at signup as some months exclude variable.

GoElectric EV tariff

Purpose-built for electric-vehicle drivers: off-peak overnight unit rate (~5-8 hours) at a fraction of daytime cost. Pairs with any smart charger. Also earns the £50.

Not eligible — what doesn't qualify

Three common cases where the £50 will not credit no matter what. If any apply, don’t waste a click on the referral link.

Business supply

EDF Business has a separate Refer a Friend programme with different terms. Consumer domestic RaF only — sole traders billing on a domestic tariff generally count as domestic, but check at signup.

Prepayment meter

Prepayment (top-up) meters are excluded across all UK supplier RaF schemes. If you currently have a PPM and want to switch to credit metering + earn the £50, contact EDF about a meter change first.

Same-address second

If your property already has an active EDF account (from a previous occupant, a partner, or your own historical supply within the past ~12 months), a second application at the same address won’t credit.

ELIGIBILITY

The 3 rules you need to pass

All three must apply for the £50 Refer a Friend credit to attach to your switch. Standard EDF credit check applies on top for the tariff itself — same one you’d hit going direct.

New

No active EDF supply in the past ~12 months at your name or address

EDF’s edge: two years of certainty through two winters.
Simply Fixed 2Yr locks your rate for 24 months — one decision, no re-shopping through winters 2026-27 and 2027-28. Price sits at the cap (~£1,663; effective ~£1,613 in year 1 after the £50 Refer a Friend credit via this site). Cheaper 12-month fixes exist (Octopus, OVO, ScottishPower) but expire before the winter 2027-28 cap changes, forcing another switch decision mid-winter. E.ON Next is the only rival on both price and 2-year term — with a higher exit fee (£100/fuel vs EDF’s £75).
